8/28/2024 (Permalink)

Water damage can quickly escalate and spread throughout the structure, leading to costly repairs, potential safety hazards, and significant business interruption. Why Quick Response Matters
Flooding can occur for various reasons, whether from heavy rainfall, an overflowing or malfunctioning appliance, or a burst pipe. Regardless of the cause, the damage it leaves behind can be devastating. Water and storm damage can pose a serious threat to your business and employees, but with a solid plan in place and the right resources, you can protect your workplace and minimize the impact of any damages. Here are some essential tips for developing a comprehensive protocol plan and knowing when to contact emergency cleaning services.
Identify Risks:
To start, you'll want to recognize potential threats to your business. Depending on your location and industry, these risks may include hurricanes, flooding, fires, power outages, or other natural disasters. Once you've identified the potential risks, you can tailor your preparation to address specific concerns and ensure a comprehensive evacuation and disaster recovery plan.
Rehearse Evacuation Drills:
Practice makes perfect, and that's especially true when it comes to emergency preparedness. It's crucial that all employees know the proper evacuation procedures, including exit routes and safety protocols for different emergencies. Take the time to schedule regular evacuation drills and address any challenges that may arise, such as organization during evacuation and hazardous material management.
Make a Recovery Plan:
In addition to preparing for the worst-case scenario, it's also important to have a recovery plan in place. This plan should prioritize essential systems and address immediate needs to minimize downtime and get your business back up and running as soon as possible. Emergency cleaning services like fire restoration, mold remediation, and water extraction can swiftly restore your workplace and prevent further damage, allowing employees to return to work promptly.

Is your South Fleming Island/ North Bradford County Commercial Business Hurricane Ready?
4/28/2023 (Permalink)
In less than a few months, Floridians will kick off the official hurricane season, which, according to the National Weather Service, starts June 1 ends on November 30.
According to a report released by AccuWeather, those in the Sunshine State who are still recovering from punishing hurricanes, such as Ian and Nicole, say the state will once again be at a higher risk than other parts of the country. And, as many of us have seen, hurricanes are not particular about what type of properties it effects. Many commercial property owners and building managers fall victim to catastrophic damage.
As a building owner or manager in a coastal state, especially small businesses, losing your storefront and merchandise can cost more than just money. It can cost your very own livelihood. Sometimes, this damage is unavoidable. But oftentimes, it is a matter of careful planning and preparedness before the storms that can be a matter of your overall business’s survival. Here are a few key steps to take to remain vigilant about hurricane preparedness.
Plan
This might seem cut and dry, but it is crucial for those who operate along the coastline to know their risk. And this doesn’t exclude those who are further inland. Ask your local emergency management office about the history of hurricanes in and around your facility. Contact your local SERVPRO franchise to schedule a full-walk through, including an emergency readiness plan created by our field experts, specifically tailored to your commercial business. Consider investing in flood insurance if you have not already. This will greatly speed your recovery if a hurricane does cause flooding. To learn more about flood insurance, contact your insurance company, or visit floodsmart.gov.
Clean
Prepare your site by having a local roofer or facilities crew member remain diligent about keeping your roof free and clear of debris. This also includes trimming any overhanging tree branches, as well as removing any loose objects. Get a pre-storm inspection from your local SERVPRO professional. Our full-service mitigation services also include maintenance performance such as sealing, clearing out drains, and more. Verify electrical wires are adequately anchored to the roof, and check that hatches and doors on HVAC units, electrical boxes, and other fixtures are closed and locked.
Coordinate
Along with your local SERVPRO franchise, make sure to have a good list of preferred vendors that operate inside and outside your business. These third parties, which are also listed in every specific ERP created by your SERVPRO professional, are vital, especially during state-wide emergencies.
Do you have the contact information for your power company handy? What about your internet provider? This includes, along with the phone number, a direct link to the company website, which often will post regular updates to outages. Having your insurance agent or broker’s contact is critical. Make sure to touch base to ensure you are fully ready and covered by storm protection. Have the local number for your emergency responders and local law enforcement. Be aware of your location within the municipality to ensure you get the most accurate and quickest response.
Protect
Property damage not only leaves you exposed to the elements, but also makes your business vulnerable to other forms of serious loss.
Make sure to back up all of your data. Ask yourself: is my data backed up off-site? How often? How are my proprietary company secrets protected? Check with your insurance provider about your coverage prior to any storm. Do you have a phone chain for contacting employees regarding closings? Have you correctly identified essential workers? Does everyone know where to go in an emergency, whether to evacuate or shelter in place?
Consider implementing a contingency operations plan for after the hurricane strikes. Practice your plan with employees and stakeholders every few months. This will also help you to anticipate any changing variables and challenges.
Collect
Along with a hurricane preparedness kit, commercial businesses should also set aside a reserve ready in case the storm makes landfall. This should not only be enough to cover not just the initial cost of supplies, but also any extra materials needed for the days after the storm. And, just setting aside extra disaster response supplies that are more inclined to run out, such as batteries and non-perishables, give you a leg-up when it comes to competing businesses that might not have done the same.
Even if your property is only predicted to succumb to the high wind elements of a tropical storm doesn’t mean that you should skimp on stashing extra supplies. Always have a storage supply of material to protect the exterior of your building. This includes any materials recommended for boarding up the doors and windows of your business. Whether you are on a floodplain or not, make sure you have enough sandbags to keep the heavy rain outside of your property. Stash a few tarps and long, strong nails in case the strong wind tears a hole through your roof. Even a tiny leak, especially in a catastrophic storm, can have a devastating impact.
Better yet? Call your New Smyrna Beach/Titusville SERVPRO franchise today to schedule a walk-through from one of our own field experts who can identify even the smallest of issues that could have a major structural impact when mixed with the elements of a catastrophic storm.

Emergency Services at a Clay County Dental Office
6/20/2022 (Permalink)
Saturday morning our emergency on-call crew received a call from a local Clay County dental office that needed emergency services. Overnight a pipe in a wall sprung a leak, causing water damage in their dental office that they discovered prior to opening and seeing patients for the day.
Our SERVPRO of South Fleming Island/ North Bradford County crew was on-site within 90 minutes to extract the standing water and assess damages. The water damage affected the flooring, drywall, and cabinets across 6 rooms within the dental office. Once standing water was extracted, demolition was performed in addition to setting drying equipment. We removed the vinyl baseboards to aid in drying and left them on-site for reinstallation once the drying process is complete to help minimize business interruption while keeping overall costs down by not needing to replace them. In addition to removing baseboards, our crew drilled holes in the drywall to circulate airflow and strategically set drying equipment to help salvage the affected flooring.
We know that dealing with water damage can be a stressful process, so we take the guesswork out and help eliminate some of the stressors. Throughout the week, a member of our monitoring team will be back at the office daily to check moisture readings, and equipment, make any needed adjustments to help with drying as well as update the property owner on the status and provide documentation on daily status through job notes and photos. Then around day 3 of the drying process or once we know whether the flooring can be successfully salvaged or not, our reconstruction manager will walk the loss site to put together a plan to restore the property back to preloss and demolition condition to make it "Like it never even happened."
If you suffer from water damage in your commercial space, your local SERVPRO of South Fleming Island/ North Bradford County is here to help! Our highly trained technicians can mitigate and dry out the excess moisture quickly before the structural integrity of your property becomes at risk for secondary damages and mold growth. Acting quickly and avoiding any delays not only save the property's structural integrity but lessens the amount of time needed to mitigate the water damage, but the timely response can also aid in keeping overall costs down. When it comes to commercial fires, there’s always a risk of fire for a number of reasons. If your business experiences a fire, it’s best to call in commercial restoration experts like SERVPRO of South Fleming Island to help restore your Clay County home!

The five most common causes of fires in commercial buildings are cooking equipment, heating equipment, electrical and lighting equipment, smoking materials, and intentional fire setting. 3/28/2022 (Permalink)
You can't predict a disaster, but you can plan for it! Call SERVPRO of South Fleming Island to set up your FREE emergency Ready Plan! 904-290-4040!
If you own or manage an office building or other type of commercial space, fire safety and emergency preparedness should be a priority. Being prepared with a well-thought-out emergency plan can not only protect your property but potentially save the lives of the people on the property in case of an emergency. Keep reading below to see if your building is prepared should disaster strike!
Have Functioning Fire Extinguishers Readily Available
You want to ensure that you have a suitable number of fire extinguishers readily available throughout the building, clearly labeled, and accessible. Taking additional time to try and locate an extinguisher during an emergency can create a more dangerous situation and lead to more damage. Your fire extinguishers should be tested on a regular basis to make sure that they are functioning properly, as well as any fire suppressant or sprinkler system.
Check Your Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarms
Your smoke detector and fire alarm systems should be inspected regularly to ensure that they are functioning properly in case of an emergency situation. Also, confirm that your building has a clearly marked exit plan so that occupants know to safely exit the building.
Implement Safety Training
An important step for safety preparedness is safety training for both homeowners and business owners. Including a fire safety training course in your workplace will help the occupants to know exactly what they do should an emergency of any kind occurs such as a gas leak, a fire, severe weather, or flooding. You can also contact our local Clay County Fire Rescue for information available to help implement safety procedures in your place of business.
Emergency Exits
Having illuminated emergency exit signs can help direct occupants out of the building in case of an emergency. Make sure that the emergency exit is not obstructed and easily accessible at all times.
Have an Evacuation Plan
Have your commercial building inspected for any potential fire code issues or potential safety hazards. From there conduct regular fire drills and educate employees on where emergency exits, fire extinguishers are and how to properly use them. Another useful tool would be setting up your free SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan. This no-cost assessment of your facility can help you get prepared for any issue that may come along, and if restoration work is required, ensure that the process is able to start as quickly as possible, keeping damages and costs down.

3 Tips to Prepare Your Clay County Business For Natural Disasters
4/19/2021 (Permalink)
Don't let storm damage affect your business more than it has to. Call the professionals at SERVPRO of South Fleming Island/ North Bradford County!
You need the April showers to bring May flowers, but you don't need the water & storm damage that can come with all the Spring rain.
Natural disasters such as hurricanes and flooding can threaten the safety of your business and employees. That’s why it’s essential to have a plan in place that can help you minimize damage and ensure your workers are protected. Below are a few tips for developing a protocol plan, including when to contact emergency cleaning services.
How to Prepare Your Company for a Natural Disaster
1. Identify the Risks
As a business owner, you must prepare for disasters, both large and small, natural or manmade. The first step in doing this is to identify situations that pose a risk. For instance, in Florida, hurricanes are a top threat. Other risks might include fires, tornadoes, or power outages. If your business is considered high-risk, such as a laboratory that contains hazardous materials, identifying the potential problems will help you prepare accordingly with an evacuation and disaster recovery plan.
2. Rehearse Evacuation Drills
Once you know which threats to prepare for, conduct drills with all of your employees so they know what to do in case of an emergency. This should include evacuating the building in the event of a fire, or taking shelter if there’s a tornado warning. Employees should know where all of the emergency exits are located, as well as what rooms or closets are away from windows. If you work with hazardous chemicals, have a list of personnel that will be responsible for turning off flames and other ignition sources and shutting off all electrical equipment. Follow up the drills with a discussion so you can go over any potential challenges that may affect the success of the evacuation. Some issues might include keeping employees organized while evacuating and keeping track of personnel.
3. Make a Recovery Plan
Each day your business is down following a natural disaster is a blow to your bottom line. That’s why it’s essential to write a recovery plan. Identify the essential systems that your business needs to function so you know which issues must be addressed first. For instance, emergency cleaning services such as fire restoration, mold remediation, and water extraction will ensure your environment is safe and comfortable so that employees can get back to work as soon as possible.
If your business endures damage during a natural disaster, turn to the team at SERVPRO of South Fleming Island/ North Bradford County. 3 Benefits of Spring-Cleaning your office or Business
4/16/2021 (Permalink)
You have enough work to do, let SERVPRO of South Fleming Island/ North Bradford County handle your commercial spring cleaning needs!
Over time, dirt and grime can accumulate in even the most carefully maintained offices or businesses. A spring cleanup, including carpet cleaning and dusting, will help your business maintain a positive impression and make your office a healthier place to work. Check out the reasons below for more information on why you should invest in professional cleaning services this spring.
Why Does Your Commercial Space Need Spring-Cleaning?
1. Improved Air Quality
Mold developing in the carpets releases spores, which could potentially cause health effects. Dust and germs can also travel through air ducts, spreading strange odors and diseases that may affect your employees, customers, and visitors. Professional carpet cleaning and duct inspections will improve the air quality throughout your building. These services can reduce your employees' sick days by minimizing germs and irritants, making your entire business more productive.
2. Durable Furnishings
Trapped dirt in the fibers of your carpet and furnishings can gradually wear down the material. Your AC system can also be affected by dust, restricting airflow and enforcing the equipment to work harder than necessary. The additional degradation will eventually cause frequent breakdowns and premature failure. Duct and carpet cleaning will minimize your maintenance costs and help you get the most out of your investments.
3. Increased Efficiency
Disorganized stockrooms and filing cabinets will lead to wasted time looking for products or paperwork, which can be frustrating for your employees. Spring cleaning is also a chance to reorganize your storage systems, making it easier for your team to find what they need at a moment's notice. You can also take the time to create more efficient spaces by putting supplies within easy reach.
If your business or office space is due for spring cleaning, call the professionals at SERVPRO of South Fleming Island/ North Bradford County. Our team of certified technicians have the tools and the training to handle everything from carpet cleaning to water stain removal for customers throughout Clay County, FL, and surrounding areas. We also offer emergency cleaning services in case the unexpected occurs. Commercial cleaning... areas that might get overlooked
1/9/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of South Fleming Island / North Bradford County is here to help! We go above and beyond to create happy customers! 904-290-4040
Commercial Cleaning – Don’t forget the Area Above the Ceiling!
It’s a common practice for many hotels, restaurants, and healthcare facilities to plan and budget for hiring a commercial cleaning company for quarterly, semi-annual, or annual cleaning of carpets, floors, and even equipment, to ensure that their guests, residents, patients, and even visiting family members will not only enjoy and provide favorable reviews about their experience, but also that they will not be exposed to any potential health hazards because of the proactive measures that were taken.
At times though, during this planning process, one area that can get overlooked, is above the drop ceiling in the kitchens, dietary, dining, and possibly even patient service areas. There are several reasons these areas can be so critical.
- There is typically more heat in many of these areas, due to the equipment in use, as well as moisture from hot water and steam from dish machines, etc…
- Pests are attracted to these areas because of the smells, food and nesting materials they can find, and the darkness and lack of activity.
Contamination from rodent hairs, urine, and feces, is a concern and not to mention the damage they can do from gnawing on electrical wires and other parts of the structure.
And while it may be a common practice for these types of facilities to require their pest control providers to visually inspect the ceilings during their visits and to document any evidence of any of these issues, there is often a disconnect as to who should be responsible for cleaning up what is found. Very often the documented issues that are found are not taken care of because the pest provider does not offer that type of cleanup service, and the facility itself does not have the manpower or expertise to effectively address these types of issues.
So, the area could remain contaminated, which could contribute to the possibility of several problems:
- Any maintenance that requires removal of any ceiling tiles could expose the workers and employees to possible health issues related to rodent contamination.
- Food safety could be compromised below the affected areas
- Rodent issues could develop to the point where customers or employees start to see live rodents, because the pest company was unable to determine if there was ongoing activity in the building because the original evidence that was documented was never cleaned up!
So, what does all of this have to do with SERVPRO? Well, I’ll tell you…SERVPRO not only has a team of service professionals capable of quarterly, semi-annual, or annual cleaning of the floors, carpets, equipment, and even walls, but they also have their own products for cleaning and disinfecting the area above the ceiling. Not only that; they are experts at identifying water damage and mold, so while they are working above your ceiling, they can also determine if there are any areas where mold be growing, or water leaks may be evident.
This is a proactive service that while it may not be visible to your guests, residents, visiting family members, and even your own valued employees; it could be more valuable for the protection of “your brand” than any of the other services mentioned.
Why? Because no one wants to find out after the fact that…
- You have a rodent issue that is being seen by your customers or employees (and of course, posted on social media), that may have been prevented, because your pest technician noticed new evidence of pest activity, because the old evidence had been removed with the last cleaning.
- Mold can cause health effects.
So, while SERVPRO will not provide any type of rodent or pest control/elimination service, nor give any recommendations as to how to prevent such issues, we will proactively provide the cleaning of these critical areas, so that you can
- Get more accurate reporting and better service from your pest program provider because you have provided a clean environment in a key area, where any new activity can be recognized and addressed.
- Proactively monitor this critical area and minimize any damage that might be caused by water leaks; such as the development of mold, weakening of the structural integrity of the building due to excessive moisture, or even ceiling tile replacement due to water damage.
While it is true that many of the services SERVPRO offers are reactive in nature, and that our goal is to be, Faster to any Disaster and to make it "Like it never even happened," it’s also true that, “An Ounce of Prevention, is Worth a Pound of Cure!” That is especially true when it comes to “Brand Protection.”
YOUR BRAND IS WORTH PROTECTING! Let SERVPRO help you make sure that nothing is overlooked… (904) 290-4040

While visions of convention checks, danced in their heads
The Yes ma'am in her office, and I in my cube
We had just settled down for a long binge of YouTube
When out of the office, there arose such a clatter
We sprang from our chairs to see what was the matter
Away to the WIP board, I flew, like a flash
Broke down the door, dropped my coffee, splash
The moon on the crest of a newly polished van,
The SERVPRO franchise finishes it's Emergency Ready Plan
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a new commercial job to finish, before end of year
With a tall, slender driver, so lively and quick
I knew in this moment, this must be the Rick.
More rapid than Eagles, the ProMasters that came
He whistled and shouted for his team by name,
"Hey Dale, Steve, Susan and Sally, go get Mike, Chris, Alex, and Ally!
To the top of the doors to the top of the walls! Now, document, document, document all!"
As before each job they all worked to comply,
There are very strict procedures and programs, we must qualify,
So onto the job site, the team, they flew
With a truck full of products, and Rick I, too
And then in a twinkling, I heard in the drive, the workers behave like a buzzing bee hive
As I started the scope, and was turning around, into the structure Rick I went, with a bound
He was dressed all in green from his head to his foot,
and his clothes protected with PPE from ashes, and soot
A bundle of equipment, he had gathered from the truck,
He emerged determined to clean up this muck
His eyes, how they twinkled, through those protective goggles
His cheeks were rosy from the mask, protecting his tonsils
His branded attire was crisp to the look,
He and his team regained control, in which the fire had took
The test sponge he held tight in his hand, for the smoke in every crevasse, was crammed
He and the team worked fast and steady, to make sure the customer and business were ready
Their level of attention to detail was surprising in itself, they cleaned and wiped every book on the shelf
With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head, he gave the customer a sense that there was nothing to dread
He spoke not a word but went straight to work, he filled all the forms and he said, with a smook
"Get it all uploaded, quick and fast, we don't want audit to look at this last"
He sprang to the truck to give his team a signal, and away they all flew, to the orange house at old Seminole,
But I heard him exclaim, as the COI was gladdened: Don't forget, we make it "Like it never even happened."
